That ship has sailed, for perfectly valid reasons that should be accepted and respected. Quite frankly, it’s disturbing how many Celtics fans want to overlook the team’s decision and Udoka’s transgressions. It’s become an every-game thing for the last couple of weeks. The conversations aren’t quite as dark this time around, but Boston has stuff to get figured out. It’s always fun to see a former Celtic blossom with more opportunity elsewhere.

Their highest pick was at number 14, where they were lucky enough to grab Aaron Nesmith from Vanderbilt. The 21-year old is regarded to be one of the best shooters in the rookie class with a shooting clip of 52% from deep in college. The swingman stands at 6-foot-6 and naturally plays the three spot. As good as he is offensively, there are some questions with his defense that Brad Stevens and the rest of the coaching staff need to address. Boston also boasts some of the greatest players in the history of the sport.

The Celtics are the cream of the crop in terms of franchise value in the league. One of the key weaknesses from last season for Boston was rebounding. They ranked number eight overall in total rebounds per game during the regular season, which isn't ideal if you want to be considered as a legitimate contender. To make their rebounding woes even worse, they lost two of their top rebounders in the offseason. The team hits the road for the majority of January as they play a season-high 10 road games during the month that include trips to 2022 First Round playoff opponent Brooklyn on January 12 and Miami on January 24. The Celtics welcome longtime rival, the Los Angeles Lakers, for their lone Saturday home game of the season on January 28 for a primetime game on ABC.
12/23/2022That said, the Celtics could use a little more fire from their current leader on the sidelines. It’s not about calling players out or breaking clipboards or anything like that. But Mazzulla should recognize that the recent slide is more than just “missing open shots” or “an off night defensively”. Recognizing that some things actually need fixed is the first step to fixing those things.
The current coach is Brad Stevens who has been with the team since 2010. Stevens was hired away from the Chicago Bulls where he was an assistant under Tom Thibodeau. He is expected to be a candidate for the head coaching position if the Bulls fail to qualify for the playoffs this season. Russell is joined in the top five by two teammates who he won a number of championships with, John Havlicek and Bob Cousy.
Pierce was the heart and soul of the Celtics in the 2000s, where he spent 15 seasons in Boston. His time in the Garden was highlighted by his 2008 NBA championship win over the long-time rival Los Angeles Lakers, where he also managed to win the Finals MVP. Grousbeck and his family have been involved in a ton of non-basketball related initiatives. After winning his first title with Boston in 2008, the Princeton alum became Chairman of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, a teaching partner hospital of Harvard Medical School. The MEE is the world's largest research facility in battling blindness and deafness since 1824. Jaylen Brown logged a monster fourth quarter for us with 23 points to push us back into the win column.
On-ball, Brown used to range between fine and very good. Brown used to be quite good at battling bigger players for position, but he’s also let that go now. What’s hit the point of unacceptable is Brown’s effort, or lack thereof, on defense. Multiple times per game, Brown gets back cut for layups, or he loses track of his man for an open jumper. The question now is whether this is something that this Celtics roster can fix on their own or if it is something that requires action from the front office. The NBA trade deadline is February 9, which gives Boston time to wait and see if the Celtics start once again resembling who they were at the start of the season.
Tatum’s explanation of his reaction is very relatable. The Celtics are far from playing their best at the moment, having dropped three straight home games and are losers in five of their last six. There was no dapping up or words of encouragement for Aaron Nesmith, who turned in a strong 15-point, six-rebound effort against his former team, as those kind of moments are commonplace in the NBA. No, whatever is going on with the Celtics is a team-wide problem and one that can no longer just be dismissed as a poor stretch of games. It's just strange that this adjustments would be happening now rather than at the start of the season. Boston hit a shooting roadblock this weekend vs. Orlando, but the team doesn't think it’s any reason to believe that the offense will detour from its league-leading production.
